Research and Overview of Indoor Air Purifiers

Dr. Riegel suggests that Indoor Air Quality is one of the most important and integral parts of maintaining a Healthy Home. An extensive research study by John Holecek supports this, explaining different features and what to look for when shopping for an air purifier.

Visit our Online Store to buy Dr. Riegel’s recommended Honeywell Quietcare 17000-S Air Purifier, the one which he uses in his own home and offices. Call our office at (248) 358-3311 to speak with Dr. Riegel about buying for your home.

Equipped with a True HEPA filter, the Honeywell air purifier captures up to 99.97% of common household particles as small as 0.3 microns and prevents their circulation through the air. This includes dust, tobacco smoke, pet dander, pollen and fabric fibers. And the Honeywell True HEPA air purifier’s carbon pre-filter helps remove common household odors by capturing larger airborne particles. Ideal for rooms up to 200 sq. feet, this unit utilizes SurroundSeal Technology to minimize leaks and ensure that air passes through the filters.

Indoor Air Quality and Promoting Healthy Living Conditions in Residence Halls

For most young people, college is a time of exploring, making new friends, and developing independence. It is also a time where most students move out of the house they grew up in and into a residence hall or apartment building for the first time.

Some of the most prestigious Universities have been around for hundreds of years–including their residence halls, which may or may not be renovated. This means there could be hazardous materials such as asbestos or lead paint, and even more commonly, mold. Only some Universities, like the University of Louisville, provide students with information on how to keep these environments safe.

Before you make a decision about your living space, it’s important to test the quality of the environment. Contact Dr. Riegel to consult and learn more about your college living space.

School under investigation after students remove asbestos materials

Recently, a small school in Ohio is under criminal investigation after children, as young as 13 years old, were very exposed to asbestos-containing building materials while gutting the building as a volunteer school project. A nearby citizen caught on tape the clouds of dust billowing out of dumpsters as the kids handled the asbestos materials.

EPA regulators visited the site and confirmed that there was indeed high levels of asbestos exposure. Almost all the interior walls and ceiling had been removed, leaving the asbestos insulation and other dangerous surfaces exposed. Tests also revealed that the tiles, piping, and flooring also contained asbestos. Experts say they could never be sure of how much asbestos the children had been exposed to.

For now, the children are being advised to log their hours and write down what tasks they performed in the gutting of the building, in hopes that professionals can gauge how much they were exposed to and begin to take restorative measures on the children’s health. Exposure to asbestos can cause devastating affects on respiratory health, even as serious as lung cancer and mesothelioma.

NEVER attempt to remove asbestos materials by yourself, and especially without protective equipment. Asbestos is only to be handled by trained professionals with high levels of precautions. Visit our asbestos page for more information on this hazardous material, and be sure to Contact Healthy Homes BEFORE you begin re-modeling or disturbing the material if you think your house may have asbestos.
