Is Indoor Air Quality the most important part of a Healthy Home?

Making a Healthy Home is so much more than eliminating mold, asbestos, and radon. It also includes ongoing maintenance for indoor air quality.

Much like taking vitamins, drinking plenty of water, and going to the doctor for a checkup to keep your body healthy, it’s important to take care of your home on a regular and ongoing basis.

According to Dr. Riegel, the most important part of a Healthy Home is your HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning) system! “This is the heart and lungs of your home,’ he explains.

The following items should be on every homeowner’s checklist to maintain a Healthy Home indoor air quality.

Every 6-12 months, you or an experienced HVAC Contractor should:

  • Inspect your furnace
  • Test for any carbon monoxide (CO) leaks
  • Replace filters
  • Balance your ductwork air flow
  • Check and maintain proper humidification settings and ensure there is no mold growth on the water system (more on this in another post!)
  • Replace any burnt out (non-ozone) UV lights in the plenum of your furnace if you have them
  • Ensure proper fresh air makeup to positively pressurize the home

At least every 3 years (or sooner; especially if you have had any construction or remodeling in your home). Vacuum out all of the floor vents in your home, preferably with a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter attached to your vacuum. (Try Searching Google for a HEPA filter for your specific vacuum model)

Move Air and Filter Air

An easy way to keep your home Healthy is to Move Air and Filter Air throughout all levels of your home. This includes the basement, living areas, and all bedrooms! Air that is moving is less likely to develop mold and overall improve the indoor air quality.

Moving air in your home can be maintained using ceiling fans, box fans, adequate bathroom exhaust fans and portable HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters especially in bedrooms and basements.  Read more about what the EPA says about indoor air quality and Healthy Homes.
